This piece is part of a group exhibtion at Art Whino Gallery that pays tribute to Legendary Boston Boxer, John L. Sullivan. He was one of the first bare knuckle boxers in the 1800's who was also known as "The Boston Srong Boy". He was considered the strongest man in the world and made over 1 million dollars during his life time.

I haven't painted a still life for a long time and it's something I've really been wanting to get back to. The doll with red hair was my Mom's from the 50's and the rest I collected from Thrift stores for $9 total! I intend to go treasure hunting once again for my next painting. There are such a variety of items with great character.

There was a lot to focus on in this still life. I wanted to remain loose with my block in and mark making while still maintaining the integrity of the subject. I did some process drawings to help before I began.

I've been landscape painting a lot more and it has helped me to loosen up in my studio work. I see more color and have made an attempt to be bolder in my mark making. I've tried to keep my approach the same as when I paint outside and to not get caught up in insignificant areas.

I've begun painting more on canvas instead of masonite. I know it seems like the obvious choice, but I have painted on masonite for the past 5 years and didnt care for canvas. Matteo's been working on canvas and I love the paint quality he achieves. Also a trip to the museum, with Cassatt, Bonnard, and Sorolla changed my mind.

I haven't done a big piece like this for a while and was ready for a size change. I'd been working pretty small and those paintings seemed to be looser, but then when I would work larger it always tightened up on me. I used a lot bigger brushes and forced myself to work everything as a whole and not to get stuck in one area. I used a very limited palette so I could concentrate on my brush marks, texture, and value.

I've been doing alot of journaling and as I do this many concepts as
far as human struggle seems to be brought to my attention.I've been
doing research and finding overwhelming information about children's
lives in the Sudan. Many babies are abandoned or given up within the
first 30 days of birth do to their parents struggles and circumstances
that are far beyond the struggles we often have.I am humbled
by how much I am given without even realizing it,to whom much is
given, much is expected.I want to use what I have been given to give them a voice.

I've had this piece in mind for a while and it all stemmed from some really rough sketches that I made last year that never really left me. I've been drawing in circles the past few weeks going between different concepts and wondering if I should just forget the idea all together.
Then as it often happens around 2 am I remembered what I had heard that day. I didn't know this individual personally, but recieved news of a man who decided to take his own life. I just kept thinking over and over again, if he only knew, if he only knew that he was not alone, that when he cried out, he was heard. That he was created with a purpose that was his alone, that no one could take away from him,that his life mattered, that he was loved. After this it became no question what I was to paint. I titled this piece "Dear Father," because when we call out in our deepest heartache, He will carry you.

Invisible Children

This is a piece that I painted for a silent auction to raise awarenss and money for the organization Invisible Children. Invisible Children aids the children in Uganda who have been displaced from their families and who are often used as child soldiers, partaking in horrible acts that no child should be apart of. The Ministry that I am involved in here in San Diego is putting on the event downtown in the form of a Art/Fashion show to bring these children a voice.

The article was based on the life of an alcoholic who made the choice to turn his life around, and in the process he was able to impact the lives of so many who desperately needed that hope.

I learned with this illustration job that the values needed to be more distinct because when printed everything came out one value.

I've been doing some fast sketches on envelopes to send out to publishers and magazines. I used matte medium to put down fabric and watered down my oil paint with linseed oil to use the paint similarly to watercolor for some of them.

I took a trip down to Tijuana, which isn't more than 40 minutes away from where I live. This was an alley that drops down behind the store fronts on the streets. There are restuarants and venders that work down the stairs.Its away from the crowds and tourists. I painted this as oil on masonite,18 in x 24 in.
